News from the Wolf Den - January 29th, 2014

We've been back at it for 3 weeks now and it has been jam packed!  Personally, it has been very rewarding - I had the honor and pleasure of taking 10 student to Pittsburgh, TX 2 weeks ago for DECA District Competition.  DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) encourages creativity and builds analytical and presentation skills related to Marketing functions in the fields of Hospitality Services, Travel and Tourism, Business Management, Business Law and Ethics, and Sports and Entertainment, to name just a few.  They have to pass a detailed test and compete in presentations before professional business people in order to make it from one level to the next.  It is a challenge and they more than rose to meet it!

Ten students competed and ten students won slots for competition at State!  We will head to Dallas, Texas February 20 - 22, where the students will compete for the honor of representing Texas at the International Career Development Conference (held this year in Atlanta, GA).

The students and their events are:

Quintorria Bell, Freshman - Principles of Business Management & Administration

Amanda Garrett, Junior - Principles of Hospitality and Tourism

Brock Johnson, Sophomore and Jairyle Josue, Junior - Hospitality Services TeamDecision Making

Bruce Barlow, Senior and Tony Nguyen, Senior - Hospitality Services Team Decision Making

A middle school technology club event was held on Saturday (January 25th).  Nineteen students attended and learned how to use GIMP (similar to Photoshop) to manipulate images.  They showed off their new skills by transforming the head of a famous person into an animal head and creating an entirely new image! The students also put their minds to work with  some challenging computer thinking games and topped it off with snacks and a pizza lunch! A fun time was had by all. Thank you to Mr. Davis, Mr. Schmieder and Ms. Martin for making this a successful and fun event!

Ms. Sharon Cartwright, Counselor, wants to remind everyone about the information posted on her website.  Parents of graduating seniors really need to encourage their students to access the site because local scholarship information is coming in daily.  Additional scholarship information is also available, along with information about camp opportunities and events of interest to our students.

Please note that Ms. Cartwright will not longer be handing out paper copies of scholarship information.  Students MUST check the website - and frequently!  This is the most efficient and effective way to get a large amount of information out as quickly as possible to numerous interested parties, so check it out!
